Your Life Is Precious — Road Safety Awareness Programme
A road-safety education initiative for newly arrived expatriate workers in Jeddah — and the unexpected first meeting that became the beginning of Indian Saudi Couple Travellers.
A Commitment to Protecting Lives
Every journey has defining moments. Some are measured by the places we visit, while others are measured by the lives we touch. For Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman, Saturday, 25 March 2017 became one of those defining milestones.
On that day, Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman delivered a road-safety awareness programme in Urdu / Hindi to a large gathering of newly arrived expatriate workers in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The programme was organised through the cooperation of the Saudi Traffic Department, Share The Road (STR), SAED (Be Ahead – Manpower Supply), and Top 1 Bikers.
The shared objective was to help workers from India, Pakistan and other non-Arabic-speaking communities understand Saudi traffic laws, responsible driving and the importance of protecting every life on the road.
Recognising that many participants were not fluent in Arabic, the session was delivered in Urdu / Hindi so that essential road-safety information could be communicated in languages familiar to the audience.
Removing Language Barriers Through Education
Starting a new life in another country brings opportunities, but it also brings new responsibilities. Understanding unfamiliar traffic regulations and road systems can be particularly important for newly arrived workers.
The programme introduced participants to important aspects of road safety and responsible road use, including:
- Understanding Saudi traffic laws and regulations.
- Practising defensive and responsible driving.
- Respecting speed limits and traffic signs.
- Wearing seat belts and using appropriate protective equipment.
- Avoiding distractions while driving.
- Taking personal responsibility for protecting oneself and others.
- Building a culture of safe and responsible road use.
The programme carried one clear and powerful message: “Your Life Is Precious.” The Arabic theme was حياتك مهمة.
For Capt. Shakeel, every road-safety message shared had the potential to prevent an accident, protect a family and save a life. The programme reflected his belief that knowledge becomes especially valuable when it is shared in a way people can understand and apply in everyday life.
Photographic Record
These two original collages preserve the awareness programme, the participants, the SAED setting and the first photograph together of Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman and Ms. Amal Ahmed. The separate card image is used only on the archive card.
The Awareness Programme in Action
The photographs document Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman addressing the audience and explaining road-safety messages through the presentation. The gathering included newly arrived expatriate workers and representatives associated with the participating organisations.
The presentation, audience and group photograph preserve the educational purpose of the programme and the cooperation that brought the initiative together.
By delivering the message in Urdu / Hindi, the programme aimed to make essential information about road use more accessible to people adapting to the Kingdom's traffic environment.
A Photograph That Would Become Part of Our History
Among the images preserved in this collage is a photograph of Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman with Ms. Amal Ahmed at the SAED venue. At the time, they were meeting for the first time. Neither could have known how significant that moment would become in the years that followed.
The collage also preserves the SAED setting and additional views associated with the programme. Today, these photographs are more than a record of a road-safety event: they preserve the beginning of a personal journey that later grew into a shared commitment to travel, community service and friendship between India and Saudi Arabia.
When an Unexpected Challenge Became a Blessing
Before the programme could begin, an unexpected difficulty arose. The person responsible for opening the office premises and auditorium was unavailable. The organisers were temporarily unable to access the venue and complete the final preparations for the arrival of the participants.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, Capt. Fahad, a valued member of Share The Road (STR), contacted someone he trusted to assist. Without hesitation, that person came to the venue, unlocked the office and auditorium, and helped ensure that everything was ready in time.
That person was Ms. Amal Ahmed.
Her assistance allowed the preparations to proceed. At that time, she was not yet known as Capt. Amal Ahmed, and neither she nor Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman realised that this simple act of voluntary assistance would become one of the most important moments in their lives.
Saudi Hospitality from the Heart
Ms. Amal Ahmed's contribution did not end with opening and preparing the venue. Wanting the organisers, volunteers, speakers and guests to feel welcome, she personally prepared traditional Saudi Arabic coffee at home and brought it to the venue.
The coffee was served alongside dates and cookies. This thoughtful gesture brought the warmth of Saudi hospitality into an educational programme dedicated to protecting lives. It reflected generosity, kindness and the tradition of making guests feel genuinely welcome.
What might have appeared to be a simple act of kindness became an unforgettable part of the event's history. Her willingness to respond without hesitation helped the programme proceed, and her hospitality added a personal touch to the gathering.
Neither of them knew on that day that Allah had already written a much greater journey for them. Looking back, the venue assistance, the shared gathering and the first photograph together became reminders of how an ordinary act of service can lead to an extraordinary chapter in life.
A Meeting Written by Allah
Looking back today, we realise that this event was about far more than road safety. It was the day Allah caused two paths to cross.
What began as a volunteer commitment to serve the community quietly became the first chapter of a story neither of us could have imagined. Years later, Allah united us in marriage. We became partners in life and on the road, and together continued a journey shaped by faith, friendship, cultural understanding, volunteerism and adventure.
That shared journey eventually became Indian Saudi Couple Travellers, with a commitment to promoting friendship and people-to-people connections between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of India, while embracing friendship and goodwill with people across the world.
Whenever we revisit the photographs from this programme, we no longer see only a road-safety seminar. We see the day our journey together quietly began.
Alhamdulillah.
Allah’s Plans — A Remarkable Coincidence
As we look back on the beginning of our journey, another remarkable detail makes this story even more meaningful. Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman first travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 19 June 1993.
Years later, while Capt. Amal Ahmed was looking through his old passports, she suddenly noticed the date of that first journey. When she compared it with her own date of birth, she was astonished: her birthday was also 19 June.
Capt. Amal's spontaneous reaction captured the surprise of the moment: “OMG!!! Really, how can this be a coincidence?”
The discovery added another memorable detail to a story that had already begun with an unexpected meeting during a road-safety awareness programme on 25 March 2017. Neither of us had recognised this connection until that moment of looking back through the old passports.
For us, this is a cherished part of our personal history: a detail discovered years later, linking the beginning of one journey to a date that has always been special in Capt. Amal's life. Alhamdulillah.
Serving Through Education
For Capt. Shakeel, road safety has always been more than a subject to teach. It is a responsibility. Every lesson shared has the potential to prevent accidents, protect families and save lives.
This programme demonstrated how cooperation between public bodies, community organisations, businesses and volunteers can help communicate important safety information. It also showed why language accessibility matters when serving diverse communities.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Saudi Traffic Department, Share The Road (STR), SAED (Be Ahead – Manpower Supply), Top 1 Bikers, Capt. Zaher AlTayeb, Capt. Fahad and all those who contributed to the programme. Special appreciation is due to Ms. Amal Ahmed for her timely assistance and generous Saudi hospitality.
May Allah reward everyone whose efforts contribute to protecting lives, promoting road safety and strengthening communities through education, cooperation and sincere service.
Significance of This Record
This programme represents one of the most important milestones in the history of Indian Saudi Couple Travellers. It demonstrated the value of road-safety education and community service, but its lasting significance reaches beyond the programme itself.
The first meeting between Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman and Ms. Amal Ahmed took place because someone needed help preparing a venue. Her response, her hospitality and the shared purpose of the gathering became part of a story that later developed into marriage and a life of shared travel, friendship and service.
This record therefore preserves two connected legacies: a community initiative intended to help protect lives on the roads, and the beginning of a partnership that would continue promoting friendship and cultural understanding between people and nations.
