Your Life is Important — Road Safety Awareness Lecture
An Urdu / Hindi road-safety awareness initiative organised by Share The Road (STR) to communicate essential road-safety messages to non-Arabic-speaking residents and expatriates in Jeddah.
Making Road Safety Understandable to Everyone
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Understanding traffic rules, driving defensively and respecting other road users can help protect lives. For residents who do not speak Arabic, receiving this information in a familiar language can make important safety messages easier to understand.
On Friday, 6 January 2017, Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman delivered a road-safety awareness lecture in Urdu / Hindi at a mosque in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The initiative was organised by Share The Road (STR), with support from the mosque's Imam and caretakers.
The initiative, titled “Your Life is Important” (حياتك مهمة), was intended to reach non-Arabic-speaking residents and expatriates with practical road-safety information. The lecture took place after congregational prayers, providing an opportunity to communicate the message directly to members of the community.
The “Your Life is Important” Initiative
The initiative addressed the importance of responsible road use and the need to understand Saudi traffic requirements. Delivering the lecture in Urdu / Hindi helped bridge a language gap for attendees who might otherwise find it difficult to access road-safety information in Arabic.
The awareness message covered practical road-safety subjects, including:
- Understanding Saudi traffic laws and road regulations.
- Practising defensive and responsible driving.
- Driving courteously and respecting other road users.
- Using seat belts and appropriate protective equipment.
- Avoiding distractions while driving.
- Recognising that protecting lives is a responsibility shared by all road users.
The purpose was not simply to share information, but to encourage safer habits and greater awareness. The initiative reflected the value of communicating essential public-safety messages in languages understood by the people they are intended to reach.
Photographic Record
The two original collages below preserve the lecture, participants and other documented activities associated with the initiative. Both images retain their agreed archive filenames.
Delivering the Message in Urdu / Hindi
Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman addressed attendees in Urdu and Hindi, focusing on the importance of road safety and responsible behaviour on the roads. The presentation provided a way to communicate the initiative's message to non-Arabic-speaking members of the community.
The photographs preserve the presentation material, the mosque Imam and the gathering of attendees. Together, they document the educational purpose of the event and the community participation that made the initiative possible.
Hospitality and Community Participation
Alongside the awareness activity, attendees were served food packages. This practical gesture added hospitality to the gathering and provided an opportunity for participants to come together as a community.
Questions were also asked during the initiative. Participants who answered questions received mobile-credit top-up cards as compliments, encouraging participation in the awareness activity.
English Translation of the Original Facebook Post
The team participated on Friday evening, 8/4/1438 H, in the #YourLifeIsImportant initiative. The initiative consisted of a road-safety lecture in Urdu, targeting non-Arabic-speaking expatriates, under the theme of introducing road safety to road users. The lecture was organised by the Share The Road group, and it was delivered by the team’s ambassador, Captain Shakeel Ur Rahman.
The Facebook post was published on 7 January 2017, following the lecture held on Friday, 6 January 2017. The screenshot of this post is preserved within this second collage and is not added as a separate image.
A Message That Reaches Beyond Language
Effective road-safety awareness depends on more than the availability of rules and regulations. People also need to understand those rules and recognise how their everyday decisions affect their own safety and the safety of others.
By communicating in Urdu / Hindi, this initiative helped make the message accessible to members of the community who were not comfortable with Arabic. The lecture, questions, food packages and participation compliments formed part of a community-centred approach to awareness.
This record preserves Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman's participation in the Share The Road initiative and the continuing importance of public awareness, language accessibility and collective responsibility for safer roads.
