Breaking Language Barriers Through Road Safety
The First Urdu/Hindi Road Safety Awareness Lecture
Making Road Safety Understandable to Everyone
Road safety is a responsibility shared by everyone, regardless of nationality or the language they speak. For safety awareness to be effective, people must be able to understand its message clearly.
In June 2016, Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman, known at the time as the Indian Solo Biker, was invited by Share The Road (STR) to deliver its first Urdu/Hindi Road Safety Awareness Lecture at the organisation's head office in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The initiative addressed an important need within the expatriate community: making road-safety education more accessible to people who communicate primarily in Urdu or Hindi.
Communicating a Message That Matters
The lecture focused on the importance of defensive driving, responsible behaviour on the road, mutual respect among road users, and awareness of Saudi traffic regulations. Above all, it reinforced the importance of protecting human life through knowledge and responsible choices.
Presenting road-safety awareness in familiar languages helped bridge a communication gap and made the subject more approachable for its intended audience.
This was more than a lecture. It was an example of how community initiatives can bring people together around a shared responsibility and how language can be used to improve understanding rather than become a barrier.
A Community Effort
The programme reflected the value of collaboration between people committed to safer roads. Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman acknowledges the encouragement and support of Capt. Zaher AlTayeb and Capt. Fahad AlQadi, together with Share The Road and its team, for their involvement in this initiative.
His father, Mr. Mir Khaleel UrRahman, was also present during his visit to Saudi Arabia, making the occasion a cherished personal milestone.
A Message Beyond Language
The significance of this initiative extended beyond one gathering. It demonstrated that public awareness becomes more meaningful when it reaches people in a language they understand.
For Capt. Mir Shakeel UrRahman, the experience reflected a wider principle of community service: knowledge should be shared, awareness should be accessible, and every effort to protect human life deserves recognition.
This initiative forms part of the documented history of community engagement that preceded the later journeys of Indian Saudi Couple Travellers.
